Why Do People Get So Much More Emotional When An Animal Dies In Movies Than When A Person Dies?
At school today, we were watching a movie in my English class, and a dog was shot off screen, and the kids in my class were very emotional. Pretty much all of them had sad looks on their faces; one girl began tearing. However, when one of the human characters was killed, nobody really had any looks of sorrow on their faces. Why is it that people get more emotional when animals die in movies than when people die?

I won’t speak for anyone else on this one, but I know that *I* get more emotional in movies when an animal dies than when a human dies for several reasons. One of those reasons is that I have had many pets, who I have been so attached to over the years. So, when I see an animal like, as you have said in the details above, a dog getting killed, I get emotional, for I love dogs, and I’ve had many dogs. I suppose in movies, I put myself in the shoes of the characters. The reason I don’t get so emotional when humans die is probably because I’ve never experienced the hardship of having a friend or family member dying, or even experiencing death around me, other than the death of animals I’ve owned. That’s probably why I get much more emotional.
Another reason why I get emotional when animals, again using dogs as an example, get killed in movies is because, like other users have said, they’re helpless creatures. They rarely ever do anything to harm anyone, and if they *do* harm someone, it’s because they’re threatened, or feel in danger. Humans, on the other hand, hurt not just because they feel threatened or in danger, but also because they’re angry, because they hate someone, because they’re mental challenged, or because they’re on drugs. Some humans deserve to die, but animals don’t.
Have you ever been in an apartment building, and seen stickers on some residents’ doors that say, “In case of fire, please rescue dog(s), [insert other animal here]“? Well, those stickers are there because some animals are unable to help themselves when in a danger such as a fire. Dogs and cats and birds and ferrets and fish and lizards and turtles and rabbits wouldn’t be able to escape a fire by themselves, because they aren’t as smart as humans are, so someone helps them. They need help, because they’re needing.
It’s just a movie - you can’t generalize the entire human population by what you saw in class.
There are more people in the world - maybe they didn’t feel as big of an emotional connection with the human character than with the animal. That’s why it’s just a movie - directors will purposely aim to get the audience to bond with one character over another.
because animals can’t help themselves. i know it sounds twisted, but a lot of people feel that way. like when there’s a fire in a house, people sometimes feel worse when the animals stuck inside. people can use their brains to get out of situations, but animals don’t have that ability. but i’m not saying that it is a good thing, but people think like that!
I can’t speak for other people, but I know I do. It is because animals are helpless for the most part. If a person saw a gun, they would have tried to react, but a dog had no clue what was coming.
Because people can defend themselves against other people better than an animal can defend itself against other people, so the animal is more sympathetic because it had less of a chance. People would probably react the same way to a baby being killed as they do to an animal being killed for the same reason.
And maybe the person who was killed deserved it.
Animals are innocent.. but people are cruel, greedy, liars etc.. I would rather see a person die then a poor animal
People are brought up thinking bunnies and doggies are cute and helpless. This kind of reaction isn’t natural it’s taught.
