What Are Some Cool/useful Things To Do With Cmd.exe Or Programming Via Notepad?

I’m just starting to get into the whole programming thing, so I’ll probably go buy some books about it…While you’re answering my question, are there any specific programs I need to make a program in Java? If so, how much are they?

    Bare minimum is the JDK (free) and a text editor.
    Notepad++ is free text editor that highlights keywords and braces.

    Netbeans is an IDE that comes with the JDK. All this stuff is free.
