When I open these documents, I can’t understand the symbols.

That means the file is not “plain text”. You probably need something like Microsoft Word to read it.

You don’t want to use Notepad. You want to use WORDpad. Notepad is for system crap.
Should be listed in the same place as Notepaid (Start> All Programs> Accessories
